StreamBox VCR has had many patches and updates.
Make sure you have all the versions with all the current updates.
Download and install.
StreamBox VCR Suite 2.0
This is especially important for downloading RTSP Protocol Real Media streams because this suite contains the 3.1 SMF+turbo and SMF+ versions needed to download from newer Real Servers. This suite also contains the 3.0 version that is needed to download some MMS Protocol Windows Media streams.
If you are not familiar with how to use StreamBox VCR, please read.
The Unofficial Streambox VCR User's Guide.
For most normal usage Streambox VCR should always be set to use a high bandwidth connection.
Settings - Connection - Bandwidth - T1 LAN (1Mbps - 1000Kbps)
StreamBox VCR v1.0 beta 3.1 SMF+turbo also has a higher setting available.
Settings - Connection - Bandwidth - 10Mbps LAN (10Mbps - 10,000Kbps)
If StreamBox VCR is not set to use a high enough bandwidth you may not get the highest quality file and may instead get a smaller, lower quality file that especially for video may cause problems such as still frame video. Setting a high bandwidth is also normal for most other recorder programs where possible.
If you have multiple versions of 3.1 like in the case of StreamBox VCR Suite 2.0 you may want to leave the setting at T1 LAN unless the stream you are recording with SMF+turbo has a Bit Rate greater than (1Mbps - 1000Kbps) which is fairly rare. This is because setting SMF+turbo to 10Mbps LAN will cause all other versions of 3.1 to be set to use 14K modem since they share the same setting position in the list and share all the same registry settings. Once you are done recording at that 10Mbps LAN bandwidth you may want to set it back to T1 LAN to avoid connection bandwidth problems with the other 3.1 versions.
If the stream you are trying to download is Username and Password protected you will not be able to download it with StreamBox VCR. StreamBox VCR does not work with password protected streams.
Try other programs from the Streaming media recording software list.
If you have trouble downloading a RTSP Protocol Real Media stream with StreamBox VCR v1.0 beta 3.1 you are probably not using a updated version and the server is probably any version of RealServer 9 or RealServer 8.0.2.471.
The StreamBox VCR Log will show something similar to this.

You need to use the updated 3.1 SMF+ or 3.1 SMF+turbo versions of StreamBox VCR to download RTSP Protocol from these servers. The older 3.1 or 3.1 SMF versions are outdated for downloading many RTSP Protocol streams and are mainly used to just determine if you are downloading from one of these newer Real servers.
The best and easiest way to get these versions is to download and install.
StreamBox VCR Suite 2.0
HiDownload, Net Transport, OEP-OEE, R7C, Stream Down are other programs that can also download RTSP Protocol from these servers.
Streaming media recording software list.
If you have trouble downloading a PNM Protocol stream with StreamBox VCR v1.0 beta 3.1 the server is probably any version of RealServer 9, 10 or RealServer 8.0.2.471. StreamBox VCR may display in it's Log this error message it receives from these servers.
You need to obtain a new player to play this clip. Please point your web browser to http://www.real.com and download the latest RealPlayer from RealNetworks. Once you have installed it you should try this clip again.
StreamBox VCR cannot download PNM Protocol from these servers. OEP-OEE which recently added PNM Protocol also cannot download from these servers.
Try changing the URL Protocol to RTSP because there is often a matching RTSP Protocol stream.
Example:
pnm://www.site.com/filename.rm
Change to RTSP Protocol using default port.
rtsp://www.site.com/filename.rm
Change to RTSP Protocol using PNM-PNA port.
rtsp://www.site.com:7070/filename.rm
If changing the URL to RTSP with default or PNM-PNA ports both fail because there is no matching RTSP Protocol stream, then your only current options are.
1. R7C Real7ime Converter can download PNM Protocol audio or video streams from these servers.
Streaming media recording software list.
The downloaded stream can be converted to AVI video or AVI, MP3 or WAV audio.
Because of memory problems (Runtime and Virtual Memory Errors) R7C will have a limited recording time so it will have problems with long streams. In many cases for on-demand streams, the server will support start and end times so the stream can be recorded in parts so that it will not exceed R7C memory limits.
Example:
pnm://www.site.com/filename.rm?start=00:00.00&end=14:59.99
pnm://www.site.com/filename.rm?start=15:00.00&end=29:59.99

There are some sites that transfer RM (Real Media) and RA (Real Audio) files with HTTP Protocol that need a special User-Agent. StreamBox VCR has a set User-Agent and will only download a small redirector file or HTML error page from these sites and will do the same or fail to connect if you change the download protocol or the URL protocol.
Net Transport, OEP-OEE, HiDownload, FlashGet will allow you to set or define the User-Agent.
In the Options for these programs try setting the User-Agent or Agent Identification to this.
RMA/1.0 (compatible; RealMedia)
In Net Transport you can set this in the Other settings... Download tab User Agent
when you add the download.
StreamBox VCR can download HTTP Protocol Quicktime. StreamBox VCR 3.1 SMF+turbo or SMF+ versions can download RTSP Protocol Quicktime but cannot make a playable file. There are no recorder programs that can currently make a playable file when downloading RTSP Protocol Quicktime.

If you have trouble downloading a MMS Protocol stream with StreamBox VCR v1.0 beta 3.1 and have tried all the protocols then try StreamBox VCR v1.0 beta 3.0 which can download many MMS Protocol Streams that 3.1 can't. StreamBox VCR v1.0 beta 3.0 is included in StreamBox VCR Suite 2.0
If you have trouble with downloading where you get a file that only has audio but no video, this is especially common with Windows Media MMS Protocol streams. Try the steps below like trying all the different protocols, different versions of StreamBox VCR or different recorder programs. These steps can also apply to other recorder programs.
StreamBox VCR is not the best program for downloading Windows Media streams. There are newer and better programs for downloading Windows Media streams.
In most cases for downloading Windows Media streams, recorders like GetASFStream, SDP Multimedia, Net Transport are a better choice.
They can download in more cases using just one program instead of several StreamBox VCR versions.
They do not have the no video problems that StreamBox VCR often has.
GetASFStream, SDP Multimedia will automatically index the downloaded file for seeking. Net Transport has a manual indexing option.
GetASFStream, SDP Multimedia, Net Transport, WM Recorder can often download a file with video from a MMS Protocol stream when StreamBox VCR or other programs fail.
If you have trouble downloading a MMS Protocol video stream that uses Windows Media 9 Video codec, and have tried both 3.1 and 3.0 versions of StreamBox VCR and both MMS(TCP) and MMS(HTTP) Protocols, then you will have to use programs like GetASFStream, SDP Multimedia or Net Transport which are better at downloading video with Windows Media 9 Video codec.
If you download a MMS Protocol video stream that uses Windows Media 9 Video codec, and the downloaded file has only audio but no video, and have tried both MMS(TCP) and MMS(HTTP) Protocols, then you will have to use programs like GetASFStream, SDP Multimedia or Net Transport which are better at downloading video with Windows Media 9 Video codec.
Streaming media recording software list.
Starting with Windows Media Player 9 Series, Windows Media Services 9 Series and Windows Server 2003.
RTSP Protocol is now the default protocol for streaming Windows Media.
Because most of these servers support Protocol Rollover, the streams can still be recorded by most recorder software using MMS or HTTP Protocols. In a few cases Protocol Rollover is disabled and only software that supports RTSP Protocol Windows Media streams will work.
RTSP Protocol Windows Media - The Protocol Rollover Problem.
StreamBox VCR does not support RTSP Protocol Windows Media streams. If you have a URL for a Windows Media stream that starts with rtsp, you will have to change that to mms to download with StreamBox VCR.
Many StreamBox VCR downloading problems or having only audio and no video problems can be solved by using the correct protocol or the correct version of StreamBox VCR. Most questions about Streambox VCR really have to do with not trying all the protocols. Auto Protocol setting works much of the time but not always. If you have a problem downloading a file or get audio but no video with it set to Auto protocol try changing the protocol like the examples below. These steps can also apply to other recorder programs.
For Windows Media file types ASF, WMV, WMA. You should try all the different protocols that could apply to these types of files.
HTTP Protocol
MMS(TCP) Protocol
MMS(HTTP) Protocol
Only HTTP as MMS(HTTP) Protocol
You should also try changing the URL.
If it starts with http change it to mms
If it starts with mms change it to http
For Real Media file types RM, RA, RAM. You should try all the different protocols that could apply to these types of files.
HTTP Protocol
RTSP Protocol
PNM(TCP) Protocol
PNM(HTTP) Protocol
Only HTTP as PNM(HTTP) Protocol
You should also try changing the URL.
If it starts with http change it to rtsp or pnm
If it starts with rtsp change it to pnm or http
If it starts with pnm change it to rtsp or http
Port numbers in a URL like rtsp://www.site.com:554/ or pnm://www.site.com:7070/ are most times not needed but that is not always the case. If a port is not in the URL then the standard port will be used.
Standard ports for these protocols are.
HTTP ports 80 and 8080.
MMS port 1755.
RTSP port 554.
PNA-PNM port 7070.
Sometimes streams use a non-standard port for that protocol.
Example: sometimes RTSP is streamed using a non-standard RTSP port, PNA-PNM port 7070.
rtsp://www.site.com:7070/
Example: sometimes RTSP is streamed using a non-standard RTSP port, HTTP ports 80 or 8080.
rtsp://www.site.com:80/
rtsp://www.site.com:8080/
Example: many times if you change pnm://www.site.com/ to rtsp://www.site.com/ you may have to specify that PNA-PNM port 7070 is still used.
Trying all the different non-standard ports which are standard ports for other protocols will often allow you to get a connection when a streaming server uses a non-standard port, and also when your ISP is causing connection problems for a particular protocol and port.
StreamBox VCR will not accept URL's where the t for TCP or u for UDP transport is specified with the protocol in the stream URL.
mmst://www.site.com/ or mmsu://www.site.com/
The solution is simple. Just remove the t or u.
mms://www.site.com/
Many other recorder programs accept but do not need the t for TCP or u for UDP in the stream URL. Many recorder program may automatically determine the proper transport or may have other ways of setting this.
If in doubt you can try URL's with mmst and mmsu in addition to mms in other recorder programs from the Streaming media recording software list.
StreamBox VCR can have trouble with certain types of stream URL's.
Url's that contain non-alpha-numeric characters like Chinese, Japanese, Korean, etc, will often be a problem. If they don't work you will have to try other recorders. If they are Windows Media streams, WM Recorder in Browse Mode will often work.
URL's that contain spaces will often be a problem.
rtsp://www.site.com/directory name/file name.rm
Spaces may have to be replaced by the unicode symbol for space %20.
rtsp://www.site.com/directory%20name/file%20name.rm
A easy way do this is to paste the URL into your browser address bar and press enter. The browser will put unicode where needed in the URL. It can then be copied and pasted into StreamBox VCR or other recorders.
URL's that have more than one slash / directly before the filename will be a problem.
rtsp://www.site.com//filename.rm
Remove any additional slashes directly before the filename before pasting the URL into StreamBox VCR.
rtsp://www.site.com/filename.rm
URL's that have charcters in the filename like the colon : will be a problem.
rtsp://www.site.com/directory/reflector:48984
Use the URL as it is but change the name in the Filename box.

When dealing with SMIL presentation redirector URL's it is best to use other software.
Although StreamBox VCR has a Post Process setting for .SMIL it rarely ever works.
Recorders like Net Transport, OEP-OEE, HiDownload, Stream Down can many times parse the SMIL presentation redirector and download the stream file.

If there is a complete SMIL presentation that needs to be downloaded including text, links, pictures, or anything else (.rm, .ra .rp, .rt, .swf, .jpg, .gif, .bmp) in addition to just the streaming media file, then OEP-OEE would be the best choice though it may be unable to properly get the entire presentation depending on how the SMIL redirector is written and the types of files involved. The newest versions of OEP-OEE have improved this ability quite a bit and if there is a problem the author will try to fix the problem if you contact him at the MetaProducts Forums.
We are often asked about the error codes that StreamBox VCR displays when there is a problem downloading.
