There are a lot of freeware tools if you want to convert a movie or audio file to another format or edit the file. The following sites have good guides on how to use these tools.

Non-seekable ASF/WMV files
Windows Media files can be made seekable or can be indexed.
If a file is just made seekable, a seek flag is set in the file that will allow the seek bar to be used in the 6.4 version (mplayer2.exe) of Windows Media Player. Many recorders set the seek flag for on demand (non live) streams. Some do not. Since most people do not use the 6.4 version this is not very good option for seeking and has slower seeking than if a file is indexed.
If a file is indexed, it is made quickly seekable in any version of Windows Media Player. Indexing is by far the better option.
The easiest way to have indexed seekable files is to download them that way.
SDP Multimedia and Hidownload automatically index Windows Media files.
GetASFstream and WM Recorder index Windows Media files if that option is checked in their settings. These recorders can also index files downloaded with non-indexing recorders.
Net Transport has a make index option that can be manually used on a file it has downloaded as long as it's download entry has not been deleted.
Some other recorders may index. This may not be a complete list.
StreamBox VCR does not index.

If a file is downloaded with a recorder that does not index the file, it can be manually indexed with some recorders above like GetASFstream or the programs below..

VirtualDub is a freeware editing, encoding and conversion program geared toward processing AVI files (it can also import mpeg-1 files). This is a must-have program and has a lot of purposes.
