To record internet radio station BBC 7:

1. Install Real Player 8, which can be downloaded here:
Real Player 8 download link

Note: Real Player 7 and earlier versions don't work with BBC 7

2. Install StreamBox VCR, which can be downloaded here:
StreamBox VCR download link

Note: This program requires Windows 95/98/ME, though it might work
with other versions of Windows

3. If using a Dial-Up connection, set StreamBox VCR to "33K Modem".
Go to VIEW > SETTINGS > CONNECTION and in the box "Bandwidth"
select "33k Modem".

4. Copy and paste the following link into the StreamBox VCR "New Item" box:
rtsp://rmlive.bbc.co.uk/bbc-rbs/rmlive/ev7/live24/bbc7/live/bbc7_dsat_g2.ra

Note: This is the address of the BBC 7 live data stream

5. Also in the New Item box, set "Protocol" to the option "RTSP", then click "OK" to
start recording (requires approx 9 MB of disk space for a 30 minute recording).

Note: Setting the Bandwidth to 28K Modem instead of 33K will reduce
the disk space needed for a 30 minute recording to about 7 MB,
with not a very great loss of sound quality.

Note: Set the Bandwidth to T1 LAN if you have a Broadband connection.
This will increase the disk space needed for a 30 minute recording to
about 11MB, but improves the sound quality of the recording.

6. The BBC 7 broadcast schedule for the next 7 days is at
www.bbc.co.uk/bbc7/listings/weektoview.shtml

7. The BBC 7 webpage, where all shows broadcast in the last seven days are
available to listen to on-demand, is www.bbc.co.uk/bbc7/listenagain/

The above method records the actual RealAudio file itself, without any conversion (thereby avoiding the distortions that conversion causes). It can be used to capture any RealAudio file, whether a live stream or a file that can be downloaded on demand.

If desired, the program StreamBox Ripper (which comes with StreamBox VCR) can be used to convert a RealAudio file to either WAV or MP3 format.
